Leppälintu

English text is the bottom of Finnish text.

Aloin kysellä muilta, joilla on mökit leppälinnun lentosuunnassa, ovatko he huomanneet sitä.

Kuvat otin eilen illalla.

I have nice birding place in an allotment garden Kotiniemi, Lahti. Every year many people who own garden there, have told me about the birds in their little gardens (there are 85 little garden in that one allotment garden). This year there are growing number of people who have watching birds. I am very glad about it, because they tell me about their notices.

Already in the spring I saw that one Common Redstart male sang in an apple tree. It always flew in same way to the tree and away from it. It sang inside its territory. So I wanted to know where is its nest. I wished that Common Cuckoo will put its egg to the Redstart’s nest.

Very soon people from couple cottage saw where is the nest of Redstart. Every one of us followed the life of these Redstarts. But suddenly happened something. One lady saw that there was a Cuckoo front of the nest of Redstart. After that the male redstart stopped its singing. During couple days it start its song again, but now it has changed its territory area. The Redstart’s have left their nest and they built new nest in some other place, not so far away from the first nest.

I don’t know what happened to their first nest. If redstarts recognize that there are Cuckoo’s egg in their nest, the redstarts may leave their nest and all the eggs in that nest. Anyway, now the male doesn’t sing anymore. It hunt insects all the time. It means that they have chicks now.

There are also the other couple of Redstart in that allotment garden Kotiniemi. This couple have their nest in one garden. Yesterday evening the lady who own the garden where the redstarts are nesting, came to me and told that she think that there is the chick of Cuckoo on the nest of Redstart. I went to her garden, but I didn’t open the nest box to see if there is Cuckoo. The Redstarts were very nervous when I went near their nest, so that why I did not look in their nest. In that lovely little garden both of redstart hunting insects all the time and they took them to their chicks.

Almost everyday the people in that allotment garden tell me some new notice about the birds. I really like and enjoy it.

The photos of the Common Redstarts I took yesterday evening.

  4. How nice that all your friends tell you about their bird experiences. I look forward to hearing of the Cuckkos or not. But how did the large cuckoo enter the redstart nest box?

    1. Thank you for your comment Phil. Cuckoo put her egg to the redstarts nest from the hole of that nest box (Cuckoo doesn’t go in that nest box), but I don’t know yet how the big chick of cuckoo came out from that nest box… I will tell you, if there is Cuckoo’s chick.

  5. Hienot kuvat! Luin äskettäin, todennäköisesti Suomen Luonto - lehdestä, käestä. Kiehtova lintu. Toivottavasti näet poikasen!
