Tuulen suunnat

English text is the bottom of Finnish text.

On Saturday morning I saw the first finches. I saw also the big flock of Brambling. On Monday morning I saw two White-backed woodpekers (Dendrocopos leucotos). One of them also drummed, so they have, therefore, the territory area there. The White-backed woodpecker is a critically endangered in Finland. The breeding population is about 200 pairs.

The spring is late. The winds do not bring the heat. There is in the internet a good application of winds. I even hooked on it. With this application the bird watchers can see whether it is to be expected the migration winds. In the summertime the bird watchers can see whether it is to be expected the wanderers. 1. Hei Sussi! Kiitos kommentista.

  8. Hello, spring is late here as well and we have had a record amount of rain this year to date! Wonderful that you have a White-backed woodpecker nearby. I hope that they breed and that we get to see some youngsters. Have a good day Diane

  9. spring is two weeks late here Anu. It is still cold when it should be warming up. Thank you for that earth wind map. It shows me that the winds in France, Spain and North Africa are holding up our summer visitors. Our Great-spotted Woodpeckers are drumming though - they stay all winter.

  15. I am assuming that the White-backed Woodpecker has other populations throughout Scandinavia, but those low numbers in Finland are dire. Let’s hope that global warming does not result in conditions so unfavourable that extinction ensues.

    1. Thank you David. Also, one of the big problem: In Finland will be added to the forest logging. The large forests will be lost from year to year. White-backed Woodpeckers, Black Woodpeckers and many other birds lose their natural nesting forests...
