Viime viikonloppuna ja alkuviikosta oli aurinkoista, joten kävin joka aamu lintuilemassa Viikissä ja lähiympäristössä. Tässä muutamia kuvia Viikistä.

Huomasin, että vedessä oli kaksi erikoista "viritelmää" ja ihmettelin niitä. Myöhemmin kotona purkaessani kasaantuneita sähköposteja, luin Tringan postituslistalta Helsingin kaupungin ympäristösuunnittelija Kalle Mellerin viestin. Hän kertoi, että Vanhankaupunginlahdelle asetettiin seitsemän tekosaarta. Jokaisella saarella on pesimälaatikko erityisesti uhanalaista punasotkaa varten. Nämä näkemäni viritelmät ovat siis tekosaaria, joille linnut voisivat pesiä. Tämä tekosaarihanke on Suomessa pilottihanke.

It was sunny last weekend and in to beginning in the week, so I went bird watching every morning in Viikki and the surrounding area. Here are some photos of Viikki nature  reserve area.

I noticed that there were two strange "things" in the water and I wondered about them. Later, while reading the accumulated emails at home, I read a message from the city of Helsinki's environmental planner Kalle Meller on Tringa's mailing list (Tringa is the Helsinki Ornithological Society). He wrote that seven artificial islands were set in the Vanhankaupunginlahti bay. Each island has a nest box especially for the endangered Common Pochard. These "things" I saw are therefore artificial islands on which birds could nest. This is a very interesting experiment.
